Started in 2001, the .NAME universal domain name extension is the sole TLD planned for personal web pages only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are popular by. Initially, solely 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to register john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already taken third-level domain names remained online.
